The Plot
Poppy, confined by her role as the Maiden, initially encounters Hawke under unconventional circumstances that spark immediate attraction. Their relationship evolves from guarded interactions to deep emotional and physical intimacy. Their banter and mutual challenges contribute to a slow-burning romance that intensifies as the story progresses. However, Hawke’s hidden identity and true intentions unleash turmoil, forcing Poppy to face devastating betrayals and question everything she believed.
My Breakdown
From Blood and Ash quickly became one of my absolute favorite romantasy reads, blending immersive world-building with a romance that made my heart race.
Poppy is exactly the type of heroine I root for—fierce, rebellious, and determined to claim her freedom despite the oppressive role she’s been given. Her courage deeply resonated with me.
Fear and bravery are often one and the same. It either makes you a warrior or a coward. The only difference is the person it resides inside.
And then there’s Hawke— Charming yet ruthless. Without revealing too much, Hawke is determined to achieve his goals at any cost. And yet he’s not the villain. I think.
Their romance unfolds with delicious tension, filled with witty banter and moments of simmering intimacy that left me breathless. The scene where Hawke helps Poppy fall asleep is one I’ll never forget.
But the depth of betrayal woven into their relationship is powerful and raw, not meant for the faint of heart.
Some truths do nothing but destroy and decay what they do not obliterate. Truths do not always set one free. Only a fool who has spent their entire life being fed lies believes that.
Hawke’s betrayal—can you forgive him?
The world-building fascinated me, especially the fresh, creative twist on vampire lore. A complex world filled with distinct types of vampires, each with their own intricate histories and power struggles that kept me turning pages long into the night.
After finishing all of Sarah J. Maas’s books, From Blood and Ash was exactly what I needed. If Maas left you craving more epic romantasy, this book will undoubtedly ease your reading hangover.
