What happens when the story refuses to stay with six POVs?

You can now buy a signed copy of Humans Don’t Have horns or even as part of a VIP box on my TikTok shop.

Humans Don’t Have Horns is also available at KU, audio, and more.

I wrote Humans Don’t Have Horns with six POVs. Different POVs allow the reader to experience the story from various angles, offering a richer, more layered understanding of events, relationships, and settings. Also, Alternating POVs lets authors control pacing, create suspense, and strategically place cliffhangers.

I’ve shared before how I used designed chapter headers to help readers navigate between these POVs.

Lian’s POV image, created by @deorafis

Sarah J. Maas uses multiple POVs in all her books. Yet in Humans Don’t Have Horns, unlike Mass’s books, the story is told in present-tense first person. One of the books that influenced my writing choice is An Ember in the Ashes.

The six POVs in Humans Don’t Have Horns are:

(If you haven’t read the book yet, this part includes spoilers)

🕊️ Lian

An Aldonian princess and the FMC. Lian transforms from a political pawn and kidnapping victim into a woman with agency, who questions everything she was taught about the PureSouls and the Cursed Ones.

💀 Daton

Our MMC. The Butcher, a Cursed One warlord. He kills with terrifying ease, but his core is devotion to his people, to honor, and, despite himself, to Lian.

🏹 The Hunter

He hunts Cursed Ones for their horns. A Renyan father propelled by desperate love for his sick daughter.

🌙Siean

Lian’s older sister. Unlike Lian, Siean’s appearance is Renyan, like their mother’s. She lives in hiding in Renya, while Lian believes her to be dead.

☀️ Dahav

A Kozari princess, a devoted worshiper of the Sun, who takes over the Kozari throne.

🩸 Niska

Daton’s lethal second. Her colors are unlike the Mongans but red like the Aldonians’, an ever-present reminder of her unwanted conception.
