The Plot
Harry dies. Voldemort wins. Hermione is taken by the regime and assigned to Draco Malfoy as his surrogate, until Voldemort can access her memories. Not only Voldemort can’t access Hermione’s memories, she has no memory of the war. Chapters switch between the brutal present and the hidden past, each change how you see both Draco and Hermione.
My Breakdown
This book gave me:
• 🧨 A dystopia that feels frighteningly plausible
• 🧵 A braid of timelines that tighten keeps you hooked
• 💔 An study of trauma, consent, and complicity
• 🔥 A love story that shouldn’t survive, and does, in ruin-bright embers
I didn’t grow up on Harry Potter, I read the books when they came out while already in University, and I loved them. Reading Manacled even got me to watch one of the movies again since it’s been so many years since I’ve seen them. So I really enjoyed the Dramione part, but I think Manacled is compelling enough without the Potter world.
Now, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – “Dark” doesn’t begin to cover it. Manacled is The Handmaid’s Tale filtered through wartime magic: systemic abuse, weaponized reproduction, and the machinery of a fascist state. There is a lot of violence and sexual violence, but I felt it was mostly dealt with well. I think the darkness of it is part of the appeal. It makes the romance so much more satisfying when we get to the good parts. It also pulls you in like a train wreck.
Craft-wise, the dual structure is ruthless and brilliant. The present-day narrative keeps you gasping for air; the flashbacks drip information just slowly enough to reframe everything you thought you understood about these characters. When the full picture clicks into place, it’s both cathartic and sickening.
The book deals with hard questions about survival and what are the moral decisions in desperate time. I found Draco extremely easy to love, wile Hermione much more complex and gray.
My only critic is I found the book a bit too long, and if you’re not Tolkien there really is no reason for three epilogues.
How it was made
Manacled started as a Dramione fanfic. It was posted in parts, grew a huge following, and became a major fandom event. Readers made art, playlists, translations, and more.
Since this is fanfic, you can’t purchase this book. I’ve been told it’s also became harder to obtain online recently. So big Thanks to for emailing it to me.
The author signed a traditional publishing deal for an original version called Alchemised. Because of rights, all Harry Potter and Handmaid’s Tale elements are being replaced – new names, new worldbuilding – while keeping the core idea: a prisoner of war with missing memories and a slow, devastating reveal of the past.
