The Plot

This is the first book in the Cruel Shifterverse series, about a young woman who discovers she is a powerful shifter and must learn to fight alongside a group of intimidating roommates to survive against the evil Fae Queen. The plot follows her journey from a powerless servant to an elite warrior, a status she must prove her worth for while dealing with her skeptical, tattoo-covered male roommates and keeping her past a secret.

My Breakdown

This series gave me:
🖤 Unhinged men who should NOT be hot, but are.
🤣 Actual laugh-out-loud humor.

I read this years ago, and decided to review it after reading Darling Pack. I devoured Darling Pack, but it was a hard DNF at the second book. Which made me realize that while I enjoy reverse harem, I always DNF it, and Cruel Shifterverse was the exception. (Well, technically it wasn’t 🤣 because I DNF’d book six, but I NEVER survived that long with reverse harem.)

the thing is. that in a lot of reverse harem and smut in general, the plot can be secondary. And while I love smut, I need plot. This is why I reviewed Kiss of the Basilisk, for a book with so much smut, it had a significant plot.

The worldbuilding in Psycho Shifters is substantial. But what truly stands out is the humor. I literally laughed out loud so often my husband was giving me the “you’re creeping me out” looks. This never happens while I read. I mostly smirk.

So you can tell Jasmine Mas understands pacing and comedic timing, even within pitch-black themes. The FMC’s inner voice was my favorite part. She was traumatized, sarcastic, and hilarious.

If you want a dark paranormal romance that knows it’s unhinged and revels in it, then Psycho Shifters is absolutely worth your TBR.

A fun fact (and a pro-tip for you):

I actually share the same editor as Psycho Shifters.

What??? Yep.

Mas started as an indie author and hired Lyss Em as her editor for Psycho Shifters. The series has since been re-released in expanded formats, so I don’t know if it was also re-edited.

When I looked for an editor, I read the acknowledgments in all my favorite romantasy books, and that is how I reached Lyss Em. And that is my pro-tip for you on how to find editors.

Bonus: She was in Austin!

Jasmine Mas was recently in Austin promoting Blood of Hercules, and of course, I went.
