The Plot

Rook, one of the last surviving Ravenswyrd witches, returns to a kingdom “on the brink of ruin” where witches and high fae are locked in a brutal conflict. To save what’s left of the Southern Lands, she must face the man she should hate most, Prince Soren Celestial, the heir notorious for his ruthlessness. The Fates decree they are mates, turning a political necessity into a perilous intimacy as loyalties fracture and war escalates.

My Breakdown

This Book Gave Me

🖤 A witch who refuses to kneel, even to fate
🔥 A fae prince who hides his mercy behind a curse
⚔️ Enemies forced to trust each other in a kingdom built on lies
🌑 Tension so thick it feels like prophecy
💢 A romance that burns slow enough to hurt and sweet enough to heal

I like Rook. She has a perfect eldest daughter vibe. She’s a master of witchcraft and seems superior to pretty much everyone. Sometimes she’s a bit too perfect, but I did enjoy her, and I really enjoyed how in-depth Bree went into the world-building and the magic.

Soren is more of a super protective fae prince than an actual villain, but he does treat our girl very, very badly. The slow burn is indeed very, very slow since they are so hostile to each other, and there’s not much of a forced proximity for most of the book.

I liked the ensemble of characters, and there’s even a bit of a found-family vibe.

I read the first book before the second one was out, which was really annoying because it ended with a cliffhanger. So I’m glad to inform you that you don’t have to wait. Both books in this duology are now available on Kindle Unlimited.

I saw that this book is listed as a bestseller on Amazon, which really surprised me because I felt it was underhyped, and I didn’t hear about it on BookTok. Overall, I enjoyed J. Bree’s Mortal Fates series more than her popular series, Broken Bonds (a true BookTok bestseller), which I had some issues with. I will say that, regardless of whether you liked Broken Bonds, Mortal Fates is extremely different, which I find refreshing.
